Happy Independence Day!

May the Fourth be with you (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Time to be particularly mindful of the fact that the struggle to maintain our liberty is permanent, and that the grave diggers of freedom are always at work, in our government, in our universities, in the news media and elsewhere. Be vigilant, be strong, be united, be free.

Update: Some good perspective from Bruce Thorton. A sample:
Given a fallen human nature, power must never be allowed to be concentrated into an elite of any sort, for neither birth, wealth, nor wisdom can guard against the destructive excesses of power. Defend the people’s ordered liberty, equality of opportunity, and equality under the law, and the freedom of all will be protected.

A friend in Bali reports that he eats in a restaurant above the Four Seasons resort where a certain ex-President stayed. So glad too see the end of the last 8 years of crap. Burn his effigy on the bonfire like Guy Fawkes and enjoy, guys. He cares so much he needs another vacation.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July, even if you don't live here and it was just another day to you.

We don't have a holiday, but any time anyone says '4th of July' the USA comes to mind, and always will. Still we should all try more to remember the people who make the nation great, every single one, not just the leaders and symbols.

This Poland 3 seas thing could be amazing. Merkel went to Mexico, big deal. Now maybe Germany may have to buy energy from Poland (they already rely on France). Putin will be ruffled. Great move, potentially great profit for US, drive a powerful wedge through Europe, a shake up does them all good.

Theory is good, but here's a practical example of what independence means, from Ann Althouse:

'I just finished reading "The Smear: How Shady Political Operatives and Fake News Control What You See, What You Think, and How You Vote," by Sharyl Attkisson. About half way through I was saying "This book would make a lot more sense if Hillary Clinton had won the election," because the "shady" operatives Attkisson scrutinizes (notably David Brock) were working to elect Hillary, and Trump was on his own, making it up as he went along.

I imagine that Attkisson had already done the majority of the work that went into this book before she had to account for the fact that Trump won. The activities she describes are important to understand, but they don't "Control What You See, What You Think, [or] How You Vote," because Trump got elected.'
